Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

 

This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

People were treated with kindness, compassion, dignity and respect.

Relatives consistently provided positive feedback regarding the approach of staff. One relative told us they had observed care being provided to [person] and described staff as "professional, friendly and caring."

One person told us, "All ok," although they felt some staff could occasionally appear patronising. This feedback had been acknowledged as an opportunity for continued reflection and improvement regarding communication and respectful interactions with the Registered Manager.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People were recognised and supported as individuals.

Care plans reflected people's backgrounds, routines, preferences, beliefs and personal circumstances. Staff described the importance of getting to know people and adapting support to reflect individual needs and wishes.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People were encouraged to remain independent and retain control over decisions affecting their lives.

Care planning focused on maintaining independence and supporting people to achieve outcomes important to them. Staff encouraged people to undertake tasks independently where possible and provided support only when required.

A relative told us [person] remained actively involved in decisions about their support. One person told us, “I have no concerns.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

People received responsive care and support when they needed it.

Daily records evidenced ongoing monitoring of health and wellbeing, with concerns escalated appropriately. Feedback confirmed there had been no missed visits and people were informed if staff were running late.

A relative told us [person] was happy with the support provided and felt staff responded appropriately whenever assistance was needed.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Supervision, one-to-one meetings and ongoing management support provided staff with opportunities to discuss concerns, development needs and wellbeing. Staff reported feeling comfortable seeking support when required.

One staff member told us, "I can speak to my manager or senior members of staff if I have any concerns about my wellbeing, safety or anything affecting me at work."
