During an assessment of Long stay or rehabilitation mental health wards for working age adults

We inspected Crossley Place on the 3 and 4 December 2025.

Crossley Place is an independent hospital that provides a level 2 rehabilitation service for women with mental health conditions that need longer term support. A bespoke package of care is provided for each patient to meet their individual recovery and rehabilitation goals. Each patient has their own apartment which is tailored to their individual needs. Each apartment has a lounge with separate bedroom, ensuite bathroom and kitchen area.

The service provided safe care. The service had enough staff to deliver care for patients. Staff completed risk assessments of patients and updated these regularly. There were systems and processes to protect patients from abuse and neglect. The environment was generally clean, well-maintained and fit for purpose.

Care and treatment was delivered in line with national guidance and best practice. Patients had access to a range of specialists to help meet their needs. Staff received training, supervision and appraisal. The service had processes for the effective implementation of the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.

Staff treated patients with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. They promoted patients’ independence where possible, so they knew their rights and had choice and control over their care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff delivered person-centred care and involved patients in decisions about their care and treatment. Patients had access to an advocacy service. Patients were aware of how to raise concerns, give feedback or make a complaint.

Managers were experienced and had a good understanding of the service and a clear overview of service performance. The service had a clear model of care that was shared with staff and patients. Staff worked together to innovate and develop, and make improvements to patient care.

During an assessment of the hospital overall

We inspected Crossley Place on the 3 and 4 December 2025. Crossley Place was previously inspected in April 2022 and was rated as good.

Crossley Place is registered to deliver the regulated activities: treatment of disease, disorder or injury; and assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. The service had a Registered Manager at the time of our inspection.

We visited both wards as part of the inspection: Meadow ward – 4 beds for women and Orchard ward – 6 beds for women.

At this inspection we inspected the service’s assessment service group of long stay or rehabilitation mental health wards for working age adults.

We rated the service as good.

12&13 April 2022

During a routine inspection

We rated this location as good because:

  • The service provided safe care. The ward environments were safe and clean. The wards had enough nurses and doctors. Staff assessed and managed risk well. They minimised the use of restrictive practices, managed medicines safely and followed good practice with respect to safeguarding.
  • Staff developed holistic, recovery-oriented care plans informed by a comprehensive assessment. They provided a range of treatments suitable to the needs of the patients cared for in a mental health rehabilitation ward and in line with national guidance about best practice. Staff engaged in clinical audit to evaluate the quality of care they provided.
  • The ward teams included or had access to the full range of specialists required to meet the needs of patients on the wards. Managers ensured that these staff received training, supervision and appraisal. The ward staff worked well together as a multidisciplinary team and with those outside the ward who would have a role in providing aftercare.
  • Staff understood and discharged their roles and responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Staff treated patients with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, and understood the individual needs of patients. They actively involved patients and families and carers in care decisions.
  • Staff planned and managed discharge well and liaised well with services that would provide aftercare. As a result, discharge was rarely delayed for other than a clinical reason.
  • The service worked to a recognised model of mental health rehabilitation. It was well led and the governance processes ensured that ward procedures ran smoothly.

However:

  • There were high levels of health care assistant vacancies.
  • There was no nurse call system for patients.
