Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment, the rating has remained good.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People were treated with kindness, compassion and respect. People and their relatives liked the staff and had good relationships with them. They told us staff were caring and polite. Their comments included, “[Care worker] is very nice” and “[Care worker] and [person] have a good relationship.” People told us their privacy was respected. People were able to choose the gender of care workers who supported them. Staff spoke about the people they cared for in a respectful way.

Treating people as individuals

People were treated as individuals. The registered manager completed comprehensive and personalised assessments and care plans. Staff knew people well. They knew and understood their cultural needs. A staff member told us about support they gave 1 person to make meals they specifically liked. They told us they made batches and froze these so the person could have these when they were not working with them.

Independence, choice and control

Staff supported people to make choices about their care. People and relatives confirmed this, telling us staff respected their opinions and always offered choices. Staff supported people to remain independent when they were able, and this was safe for them. The registered manager discussed people’s abilities with them and their relatives. Information about these were recorded in care plans.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Staff responded to people’s immediate needs. People and their relatives told us staff were attentive and responded well when people’s health or care needs changed. Staff understood how people expressed distress and communicated their needs. This ensured they could respond when people needed extra care or support.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

There were systems to support staff wellbeing. There were regular formal and informal opportunities for staff to meet with their manager and each other. They told us they were supported to learn and develop in their role and take on new responsibilities if this is what they wanted. Staff told us they could contact the registered manager at any time, and they were always available to help with problems or answer queries.
