Our view of the service

Yeovil Renal Unit is operated by Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services Limited. It provides satellite renal dialysis services for people referred from the local commissioning trust.

We carried out a comprehensive assessment of Yeovil Renal Unit on 16 May 2025, as it had not been assessed since the service was registered with CQC. Yeovil Renal Unit was registered with CQC in May 2019 to deliver the regulated activities: Diagnostic and screening procedures, and Treatment of disease, disorder or injury. The service had a registered manager, clinic manager, registered nurses, dialysis assistants, health care assistants and a clinic secretary. At the time of the assessment, they were actively recruiting for a deputy clinic manager.

We assessed 1 assessment service group: Dialysis services, where we looked at 34 quality statements. We visited the renal unit as part of the assessment. In our assessment of dialysis services, we found there were enough staff, who were appropriately qualified and trained to care for people and keep them safe. Staff were friendly, professional and caring. Staff managed safety incidents well and learned lessons from them.

The service was clean, tidy and well-maintained. There were close links with the local NHS trust, and patients’ treatments were regularly monitored and discussed to optimise outcomes. Staff listened to patient feedback and responded to complaints.

There were effective governance and accountability arrangements, and a positive culture where staff were encouraged to speak up or raise concerns.

The service mostly monitored risks; however, we found some patients had co-morbidities that were not formally documented in care plans. Therefore, they did not always manage or monitor people’s safety. However, we were told all co-morbidities were discussed in regular team meetings and renal clinics.

At this assessment we identified one breach of regulation: 12 Safe Care and Treatment.

We rated the location as good. However, we found a breach of regulation in relation to care plans for patients on dialysis.
