Our view of the service
We assessed the service on 16 May 2025
The service had a good safety culture, where patients’ care was regularly discussed. There were strong links with the local NHS trust for reviewing patients and transferring care if necessary. There were enough staff, who were appropriately qualified and trained to care for people and keep them safe. Staff managed medicines and infection control risks well.
Staff treated people with compassion and kindness and respected their privacy and dignity. Patients were encouraged to be active partners in their care and take responsibility for elements of their dialysis treatment. Information was available for patients in several formats. Staff managed safety incidents well and learned lessons from them. The service listened to patient feedback and responded to complaints.
The service was clean, tidy and fit for purpose. The service was accessible.
Staff told us there was an open and supportive culture in which they were able to discuss role development. The leaders were visible and approachable.
Patients had individualised care plans that helped assess the risks to their health and safety when receiving care and treatment. However, we saw patients with certain co-morbidities had not had their conditions formally documented in care plans. Therefore, they did not always manage or monitor people’s safety. This was a breach of the regulation Safe care and treatment of the Health and Social Care Act.
People's experience of this service
People told us they were receiving good care from competent staff. They told us the atmosphere was good, and staff were helpful, friendly and approachable. People thought the service was clean, tidy and well-maintained.
People told us staff accommodated their requests for specific appointment times, as well as their personal needs whilst on the unit. Although staff checked on people and provided blankets when requested, some people told us they felt cold on the unit.
Some people told us they were not aware of the arrangements for family visits whilst on the unit, and they did not feel able to ask.
Some people were affected by delays with patient transport, which had an impact on appointment times and delays in treatment. Staff told us the reliability of patient transport was going to be raised at the next contract review meeting with the NHS trust and the patient transport provider.
