Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff promoted people’s dignity and respected them. Staff asked about their choices of food, drink, clothes and whether they wished to remain in their room or do activities. One relative said, “All the staff are kind and considerate. We always feel that this room is our loved one's home, and we are welcome in it.” People were well supported to remain independent. One person said, “[Registered manager name] has moved mountains for me so I can be as independent as possible. This may involve some risk but it’s what I need to do.”

People were supported to experience a range of activities and broaden their horizons. The management team had recently enhanced their activity staff and plans were underway to hold various events, including various fetes and outdoor activities.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.
