Women, and where appropriate those close to them, were involved in assessments of their needs. Non-diagnostic ultrasound scanning was based on latest evidence and good practice guidance. Staff used approved scanning protocols embedded within ultrasound equipment to support consistent and safe practice based on assessed needs. Outcomes met expectations. Women’s comfort was observed throughout the procedures. Staff obtained consent prior to carrying out the ultrasound scan.

However, we found:

Policies and procedures did not always reflect national guidance and lacked detail for staff to implement. Consent policies did not reflect the most up to date guidance, we did not see evidence Mental Capacity Act (MCA) training had been provided and some staff lacked knowledge of how the MCA applied in their role. Staff made sure women understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent.
