Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff knew people really well and spoke about people with affection and respect. A staff member said, “We have wonderful clients. We try to put people at ease; and build a trusting relationship.”

People were very positive about the care they received and told us staff were kind and respectful. People told us, “The carers are certainly kind, it is like having friends coming into your home, you get to know them, have a laugh” and “The carers absolutely love [person], they are like a family member, they have built relationships with [person]. Because the carers are local, [person] knows some of their families. I feel confident with them looking after [person], their main concern is [person’s] comfort.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Staff consistently told us they valued getting to know people well. A staff member said, “It’s all about being person centred. Getting to know how people want things done, how they want to be looked after. It’s about continuity, flexibility, and accommodating people.”

People valued the continuity of care provided by local staff, who knew them well and had developed meaningful relationships with them and their families.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and well-being. People were supported to make choices and maintain and develop their independence.

Where they wanted to, people were supported to remain connected to their local community through activities such as going for walks, shopping and meeting others socially. One person told us, “They take me out for walks, we go shopping or for a coffee.” A relative said, “[Person] likes the carers, likes their company, the carers seem to enjoy their job. They support [person’s] independence, try to get [person] to do things.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. A person told us, “The carers are so attentive, they are on the ball, if anything is wrong, they are on to it.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the well-being of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they felt listened to, very valued and supported. They spoke positively about the registered managers and described them as approachable, supportive and flexible. Staff told us, “[Managers] are really nice. They make you feel at ease. They really listen to you and are very open” and “They (managers) are good at making you feel cared for. They are thoughtful and caring.”
