The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice. The provider worked with people to ensure that where improvements could be made, they were actioned promptly.

The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to establish and maintain safe systems of care, in which safety was managed or monitored. They made sure there was continuity of care, including when people moved between different services. Where needed the provider supported people with helping them make requests for equipment they needed, such as for mobility.

The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. Staff concentrated on improving people’s lives while protecting their right to live in safety, free from bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, avoidable harm and neglect. Staff had received training in safeguarding people from abuse and understood their responsibilities and how to raise any concerns.

People told us they felt safe using the service. People said, “We feel [person] is completely safe with the carers, and we trust them completely” and “I feel completely safe with [staff].”

The provider worked with people to understand and manage risks by thinking holistically. Staff provided care to meet people’s needs that was safe, supportive and enabled people to do the things that mattered to them.

Risks were well managed and care plans and risk assessments were person centred. People were involved in all decisions about their care and support. Records reflected what was important to and for the person.

The provider detected and controlled potential risks in the care environment. They made sure equipment, facilities and technology supported the delivery of safe care.

One person said, “I feel very safe with them all. At the moment I use [mobility aid] and they are all trained well in using it.”

The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.

Staff received the training and support they needed to undertake their roles effectively and told us they were able to spend time with people and get to know them. They told us they felt well supported. One staff member said of working at Montpellier, “It’s great. It’s so different to other agencies. You get time to spend with people.”

People told us staff were well trained, and the support was well organised. People said, “[Staff member] knows exactly what she is doing and always comes on time and stays the time required and sometimes a bit more if needed” and “They are well trained, and I do feel safe with my ‘care people’.”

The provider assessed and managed the risk of infection. They detected and controlled the risk of it spreading and shared concerns with appropriate agencies promptly. Staff had received training in infection control and prevention.

People told us staff always wore personal protective equipment (PPE) where needed and had good hand hygiene. One person said, “They wear PPE when necessary and wear gloves when preparing food.”

The provider made sure that medicines and treatments were safe and met people’s needs, capacities and preferences. Medicines were managed and administered safely. Staff had received training in medicines administration.
