Kindness, compassion and dignity

People and their relatives told us staff treated them with kindness and respect. They said staff were friendly and supported them in a way that helped them feel comfortable and valued. One person told us, "The care is second to none, communication, always making sure everything is alright, care is second to none, no stone unturned.”

Staff told us they aimed to provide care in a respectful and person-centred way. They explained they were mindful of people’s privacy and dignity when delivering care and took time to understand people’s preferences. This helped ensure people were supported in a way that maintained their dignity and respected their individual needs.

 

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and ensured people’s care, support and treatment reflected their needs and preferences. Consideration was given to people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, cultural backgrounds and protected characteristics so that care could be delivered in a way that respected who they were as individuals.

Staff told us they took time to understand people’s preferences, routines and personal histories. Information about people’s individual needs and preferences was recorded in care plans to guide staff in providing personalised support. Staff explained this helped them deliver care in a way that was meaningful and appropriate foreach person.

People and their relatives told us staff knew them well and respected what mattered to them. They said staff took account of their preferences when providing support.

 

 

Independence, choice and control

People were supported to maintain independence, choice and control over their daily lives. Care plans included information about the support people required and the activities they were able to carry out independently. Staff told us they encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves and provided support when needed.

People and their relatives told us staff involved them in decisions about their care and respected their preferences. Staff explained they offered choices during visits to ensure people remained in control of their support.

One staff member described how this was done, saying,“By giving them choices, as an example, what to eat, dress, what entertainment they want.”

 

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider sought to understand people’s needs, preferences and wishes so staff could respond appropriately during care visits. Staff were attentive to people’s wellbeing and responded when support was required. They told us they observed people during visits and would provide reassurance, assistance or additional support if someone appeared uncomfortable or distressed.

People and their relatives told us staff acted promptly when support was needed. Staff explained they would take appropriate action if concerns about a person’s wellbeing arose, including informing relatives or the management team when necessary.

 

 

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider supported staff wellbeing and ensured staff had access to guidance and support when needed. Staff told us the management team was approachable and available to provide advice or assistance. One staff member told us, "Anything I need they are always there for me.”

Staff said they felt supported in their roles and were able to contact managers if they required guidance. This helped staff feel confident when delivering care and supported them to provide consistent care to people using the service.
