The provider had a shared vision, strategy and culture. This was based on transparency, equity, equality and human rights, diversity and inclusion, engagement, and understanding challenges and the needs of people and their communities. The provider had a clear vision and set of values aimed at providing compassionate care and plans for developing the service. The registered manager told us they communicated with staff about this regularly during meetings, via email, supervision, and verbally. A staff member told us, “There is a culture of open communication, where our ideas are always welcomed rather than dismissed.”
Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders
The provider had inclusive leaders at all levels who understood the context in which they delivered care, treatment and support and embodied the culture and values of their workforce and organisation. Leaders had the skills, knowledge, experience and credibility to lead effectively. They did so with integrity, openness and honesty.
The service had an established registered manager. Staff gave positive feedback about the leadership and management of the service. A staff member said, “I believe the management is transparent and friendly. Everyone is encouraged to voice their opinions during handovers and team discussions, and I've observed that complaints are handled politely.”
Freedom to speak up
The provider fostered a positive culture where people felt they could speak up and their voice would be heard. Staff knew about the whistle blowing procedure and were confident to use it if needed. A staff member told us, “I feel confident in using it [whistle blowing procedure] if I ever needed to.
Workforce equality, diversity and inclusion
The provider valued diversity in their workforce. They worked towards an inclusive and fair culture by improving equality and equity for people who worked for them. Staff did not raise any issues about equality and diversity. A staff member told us, “Working for Cornerstone Healthcare is rewarding because the company values both its staff and the people we support. There’s a strong focus on training and development, which helps me grow in my role. The provider had policies and procedures relating to equality, diversity and inclusion. Staff had also completed equality and diversity training.
Governance, management and sustainability
The provider had clear responsibilities, roles, systems of accountability and good governance. They used these to manage and deliver good quality, sustainable care, treatment and support. They acted on the best information about risk, performance and outcomes, and shared this securely with others when appropriate. The provider had a structured approach to quality assurance system which had been successful in identifying issues and areas for improvement.
Partnerships and communities
The provider understood their duty to collaborate and work in partnership, so services worked seamlessly for people. They shared information and learning with partners and collaborated for improvement. Staff understood the importance of working in partnership.
Learning, improvement and innovation
The provider focused on continuous learning, innovation and improvement across the organisation and local system. They encouraged creative ways of delivering equality of experience, outcome and quality of life for people. The provider had systems to investigate and analyse incidents and act on them. There hadn’t been any reported to date. Staff told us there was an emphasis on promoting learning. A staff member said, “I feel encouraged in my position. The team has been friendly and understanding. My mentors are supportive and helpful, and I feel free to ask questions. It's an excellent setting for learning.”
