Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People and their relatives told us staff treated people as individuals and met their specific needs. Details of people’s individual needs were reflected in their support plans. These had been updated to guide staff to support them, particularly where they were unable to communicate their needs themselves due to living with dementia or suffered emotional distress. Staff demonstrated a good knowledge of the people they supported and described the individual approach they took to meet their needs

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff were observed supporting people in their day to day activities. People were given choices of what they wished to do. We observed staff giving people time to process information and make choices. Staff used a calm approach and paid attention to people’s responses and provided different choices until the person was happy. A resident survey reflected our observations with people commenting positively on choice and control of their care. We saw people involved in activities aligned with people’s specific interests.

Visitors to the home were welcomed at any time. We observed a number of people’s relatives and friends attend the service on the day of our assessment visit.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Staff could recognise and understood when people were showing signs of distress or frustration and there was information in care plans about how to respond. This meant they were able to quickly recognise when someone needed support or when their needs had changed.Staff were knowledgeable about people’s needs and understood when people needed support.
