Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
At our last assessment, we rated this key question good. At this assessment, the rating has remained good.
This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity
People were treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. They told us staff treated them and their homes with respect. People had good relationships with staff. Comments from people and their relatives included, “[Person] has a good chat with staff. They are very good. They have struck up a good friendship”, “I see the care workers are so polite and friendly. I can’t fault them” and “They are excellent. [Person] is always saying how happy and lovely the care worker is.”
Treating people as individuals
Staff treated people as individuals. People and their relatives told us the staff knew them well. The registered manager explained she ensures staff personalities and skills matched people’s needs. People told us staff discussed their shared interests with them. Comments from relatives included, “[Person] absolutely looks forward to the visits” and “The mental stimulation for [person] is good. It is nice for [them] to have someone to talk with.”
Relatives also told us staff were understanding of situations people found challenging. A relative explained, “[Person] is proud and finds accepting care hard. Staff understand that.” Other comments from relatives included, “The care workers are so in tune with [person]” and “Care worker suits the rhythm of the house and has fitted in well.”
People’s cultural, religious and individual needs were clearly recorded and staff understood these. Comments from staff included, “[Person] and I share and understand each other’s faith” and “[Person] likes to listen to cultural music, so I play this for [them].”
Independence, choice and control
People were supported to make choices about their care. They told us staff offered choices and respected their decisions. People were supported to remain independent when they wanted, and this was safe for them. Care plans recorded people’s skills and information about what they liked to do for themselves.
Responding to people’s immediate needs
Staff responded to people’s immediate needs. People and their relatives told us staff were attentive and responded well when people’s health or needs changed. A staff member explained, “I communicate with [person’s] family and the manager when I felt [person] needed medical intervention because [their] health was deteriorating.”
Workforce wellbeing and enablement
The provider supported staff wellbeing. Staff told us they were well supported. They explained they had regular meetings with the registered manager and could contact them anytime they needed. A staff member explained, “[Registered manager] supports me well. I am happy with everything they are doing.”
