Shared direction and culture

Score: 3

Stockwell Road Surgery had a shared vision, strategy and culture. This was based on transparency, equity, equality, human rights, diversity, inclusion and engagement. Staff and leaders understood the challenges and the needs of people and their communities.

Staff we spoke to at the time of our visit confirmed that they felt supported by their line manager and senior management and that managers were visible and approachable. They also stated that they had enough guidance, policies and procedures to do their job well, that they liked working at the surgery and that there was a positive culture and good working atmosphere.

Staff had opportunities to contribute to the development of the surgery’s vision and strategy, and this was kept under review. Leaders monitored and reviewed progress against the delivery of their strategy.

The surgery was aware of local challenges which affected them (such as a projected increase in their patient list size and a potential increase in the number of frail/elderly patients) and worked with partner agencies to address these challenges. At the time of our visit, building worked was ongoing to build 2 additional consultation rooms, with the aim of being able to accommodate additional GP staff and maintain high standards of care/access for patients.

Staff and leaders actively promoted equality and diversity and worked to identify the causes of any workforce inequalities. They demonstrated a positive and compassionate listening culture that focused on learning and development. All staff we spoke to confirmed that there was a positive culture in the practice and reported that management were approachable and had ‘an open-door policy’.

Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Human Rights training was mandatory for all staff, and all staff had completed it.
