Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 4

Stockwell Road Surgery was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

The surgery performed significantly better than the national average in the results of the 2025 National GP Patient Survey. This showed people felt they were listened to and that they were treated with kindness.

For example, 91% of respondents to the survey felt the healthcare professional at their last appointment was good at treating them with care and concern, (compared to a national average of 86%) and 88% of respondents felt that the healthcare professional they saw was good at considering their mental wellbeing, (compared to a national average of 74%).

Most respondents (93% of those surveyed) also stated that the healthcare professional they saw or spoke to at their last appointment was good at listening to them, (compared to a national average of 87%). In addition, 96% of respondents stated that they found the reception and administrative team at the practice helpful, (compared to a national average of 83%).

‘Friends and Family Test’ feedback from patients over the last 6 months also reflected a high level of satisfaction with the practice with 100% of respondents rating the practice as ‘good’ or ‘very good’.

This positivity was mirrored in feedback we received from patients during our assessment who described staff members as “caring and understanding”, “friendly”, and “a calming presence”.

During our visit we observed that arrangements were in place to promote patients’ privacy and that rooms used for intimate examinations had appropriate privacy curtains. We also observed staff dealing with patients in a caring and empathetic manner and responding quickly when a patient was experiencing health issues in reception and an emergency alarm was activated.

Although chaperone training was not mandatory for all staff, it had been completed by those staff who required it and we saw that there were posters on display (both in reception and in treatment rooms) advertising that chaperones were available.

Social prescribers, working through the PCN collaborated with the provider to support patients through holistic assessments. They offered a range of services and could explore support for patients’ mental wellbeing; help patients be healthier, more active and socially connected; and assist patients to live well and more independently.

Specific examples of how social prescribers had helped patients were provided during our visit. These included, two elderly patients with caring responsibilities who had been supported with dementia and end of life care; a young adult experiencing anxiety and self-harm who had been supported to become more independent and less socially isolated; a single-parent who needed support with balancing their home and work commitments; and a patient who required support following a relationship breakdown. In all of these examples, positive outcomes were noted.
