Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 12 January 2026 – 2 February 2026. De Bruce Court is a care home providing nursing care to a maximumof 46 people. At the time of the assessment, 33 people were living at the service. We completed this unannounced assessment in accordance with our risk monitoring processes.
The service had a manager registered with the Care Quality Commission. This means that they and the provider are legally responsible for how the service is run and for the quality and safety of the care provided.
Staff supporting people had the knowledge and training to identify safeguarding concerns and take appropriate action to protect individuals from harm or abuse. People had personalised risk assessments in place for staff to follow to keep them safe.
Care plans were reviewed regularly and updated if people’s needs changed. People were supported to live their lives as independently as possible, with their care needs tailored to their individual choices.
The service ensured people’s accommodation was appropriately tailored to meet their individual needs and personal interests. The service had good working relationships with visiting healthcare professionals. One of the healthcare professionals we spoke with said, “I have found the current team to be very competent, engaging and compassionate.”
We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. People were supported to access the community and enjoy activities, as well as being supported to be as independent as possible, whilst remaining safe.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives spoke positively about the care and support provided by the service. One person said, “The staff are brilliant. [Registered manager] is a really good manager, if you ask her to get things done, she does it." Another person told us, "I love it here, it's great. It's nice and you get lovely food.”
People in the service also enjoyed doing a range of activities such as going out in the community and playing sports. One person told us, "On Wednesday's I go to a spa at Sporting Lodge, and will go to the fair when it's here, and Seaton Carew.”
Relatives told us there were enough staff available to meet people’s needs and keep them safe. One relative told us, “On the whole, yes, I feel [person] is safe. I’m quite happy.”
