The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. The provider shared concerns quickly and appropriately.

People and their relatives expressed high levels of satisfaction with the care provided, highlighting that they felt safe and well-supported. One person described staff as, “More like friends,” noting that their support enabled them to remain at home. Relatives reported confidence in staff’s ability to maintain safety, even when they were away.

Involving people to manage risks

Score: 3

The provider worked with people to understand and manage risks by thinking holistically. Staff provided care to meet people’s needs that was safe, supportive and enabled people to do the things that mattered to them.

The service had effective systems in place to manage risks to people’s personal and environmental safety. Staff understood their responsibilities for keeping people safe in their own homes and followed clear guidance when accessing people’s property. Security arrangements were well documented in care plans, ensuring people’s privacy and safety were maintained.
Fire safety measures were robust. People had their own smoke alarms, which staff checked monthly. Where concerns were identified, the service worked in partnership with the local fire service to provide advice and support, reducing the risk of harm.
Staff were trained in moving and handling and demonstrated confidence in applying safe techniques. At the time of inspection, no one using the service required mechanical equipment for transfers. However, staff told us if someone’s needs changed, refresher training would be provided before using any new equipment. This proactive approach ensured staff were prepared to respond to changing needs safely.
The service promoted independence while managing risk. Care plans contained detailed, person-centred information about how people wanted to receive their care. Staff encouraged people to participate in daily tasks safely. For example, one person enjoyed helping with meal preparation but required support with lifting heavy pans and using the cooker and oven. Staff followed guidance to enable the person to remain involved without compromising safety.
