Effective
Effective – this means we looked for evidence that people’s care, treatment and support achieved good outcomes and promoted a good quality of life, based on best available evidence.
At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s outcomes were consistently good, and people’s feedback confirmed this.
This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Assessing needs
The provider made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them.
‘Getting to Know You’ workshops were held with people, their relatives and external professionals before the person received support from the service. Specialist staff created support plans, incorporating the information gathered from people. These contained detailed person-centred information and were regularly reviewed.
Staff supported people’s communication needs effectively. The service sent annual questionnaires to people, reviewed peoples’ information preferences and enquired how they wish to be communicated with and in what format. People’s preferences were recorded in their support plan.
Methods of communication included Makaton, the use of pictures/que cards, visual timetables, and “now and next” boards. This ensured people’s wishes and choices could be recognised.

Consent to care and treatment
The provider told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering person-centred care and treatment.
Staff had received training on the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 and understood their roles and responsibilities in relation to the MCA. The service was working within the principles of the MCA and appropriate legal authorisations were in place, through the Court of Protection.
Staff had a good understanding of consent. A staff member told us, “Staff must focus on an individual’s needs, what they like or dislike and help an individual to achieve life goals by focusing on theirabilities what they can do and encourage them to do as much as they capable to do, give them choices and respect it.”
