Independence, choice and control

Score: 4

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff supported people’s independence, choice and control over their own care. One person was supported to manage a health condition independently and effectively using technology linked to their own mobile phone. They informed staff of any changes and were supported to take the appropriate action.

People were encouraged to set ‘My Future Hopes and Dreams’ objectives to build independence. Care plans outlined the path to achieve each goal and were monitored to allow staff to support the person to succeed.

People had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing. A relative told us, “We are really happy with New Beginnings — the staff and provider are brilliant. It is so lovely to see your relative being part of a community rather than an institution. They’ve got lovely neighbours, and it feels like family.”

The registered manager told us proudly that the service was judged Newcastle City Council’s “Best Community Allotment Plot 2023.” It was in recognition of their work supporting people to access and engage in diverse outdoor activities from arts and crafts to growing prize leeks in their allotment.
