The provider made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. People and relatives told us they were involved in discussions and reviews of their care needs. Their comments included, “We were involved with [family members] care plan and it is reviewed every 6 months. If there is any issue that needs to be discussed, we ring them and they sort it immediately now”, and “The care plan which I was involved with has been reviewed and it is all going very well at present.” The registered manager explained that care plan and risk assessments were reviewed annually or following a discharge from hospital or change in care needs. Staff members told us the care plans and risk assessments provided sufficient information on each person’s care needs. Staff confirmed they regularly read people’s care plans, and they felt confident when supporting people with their individual care needs. A staff member said, “I feel very confident, and I know my duties and responsibilities towards my clients.”

The provider told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering person-centred care and treatment. The provider had a process to assess if a person could make informed decisions about their own care through the completion of mental capacity assessments. If a person was identified as being unable to make decisions the provider developed guidance as to how to provide care in the person’s best interest. People and relatives confirmed staff explained what they were doing and asked people for their consent to care. Their comments included, “They always ask [family member] for consent before they get on and do things for [family member]”, and “[Staff member] always asks consent and never rushes [my family member].” Staff confirmed they had completed training in relation to mental capacity and understood how it impacts the provision of care. A staff member said, “I do understand that it means that to protect and empower those people who lack capacity to make their own decisions.”
