Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

 

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good.

 

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity.

 

People using the service told us that staff treated them with respect and provided care in a dignified way. Comments included, “She a kind, a very good lady”, “I do think they are dignified with Mum on her personal care” and “They wash her every day. I have never heard that they are not respectful or the like.”

 

Staff spoke about people with empathy and compassion. One care worker said, “We have to be sure she is comfortable with us and keep her at the centre of our care.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

 

People told us that staff respected their individual needs. One person said, “They are certainly aware of her likes and dislikes, and they respect those” and “There is one lady that does her hair, washes and brushes it, Mum loves that.”

 

Care workers were aware of people’s individual preferences such as what they liked to eat and how they preferred their care to be delivered. These were in line with their recorded wishes in their care plans.

 

People’s care plans were personalised and contained biographical information about them. This helped care workers to get to know them.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

 

People told us staff supported them to lead independent lives, and the support provided helped them to stay at home for longer. Comments included, “She washes me, she helps me always” and “They prepare my meals for me which I eat later.”

 

Staff gave us example of how they promoted people’s independence, “I respect her choice, offer her a choice of meals and encourage her to remain independent as possible.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

 

The providers staffing arrangement included on-call and emergency support if needed.

 

People told us the provider was flexible and was able to increase or decrease care visits as needed. They said the provider was responsive to any change they requested.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

 

Staff told us the registered manager fostered a positive work environment and looked out for their wellbeing. Comments included, “The manager looks out for us, really supportive.”
