Rainbow Baby Scans

Date of assessment: 10 June 2026. Rainbow Baby Scans is an independent gynaecology and pregnancy scanning service which provides a range of diagnostic screening services for pregnant women or women wishing to become pregnant in Bexhill on Sea East Sussex. An experienced sonographer carries out pregnancy scans. The sonographer trained in the NHS and had more than 20 years’ experience.

Rainbow Baby Scans Limited registered the location ‘Rainbow Baby Scans’ with the CQC in July 2024 and this is the first assessment of this service.

This was a small service which employed one sonographer and one receptionist/administrator.

The service offered a wide range of scans which included but was not limited to, gynaecology scans for pre and post pregnancy, dating scans, wellbeing scans, 4d scans and gender scans. Women were given a USB copy of their scan with video clips and images, 4 thermal prints and 2 glossy prints, glimpse imaging and optional rescans if the baby was not in an ideal position.

Throughout this report we refer to pregnant women and people or service users as ‘women.’ We refer to the reporting period, which is July 2025 to June 2026.

At this assessment we identified 2 breaches of regulations in relation to Safe Care and Treatment and Good Governance and asked the provider for an action plan.

This was the first assessment of Rainbow Baby Scans since they registered with the CQC in July 2024.

In our assessment of Rainbow Baby Scans, staff were competent and trained, they understood how to protect people from abuse, they involved people in decisions about their care, and service delivery aligned to evidence-based practice. Staff were caring and understood the needs of the women and provided additional support for those who suffered a pregnancy loss. The service was responsive to the needs of the local community.

However, the service needed to strengthen its governance to ensure it made improvements to risk assessments and record keeping. The service needed to implement a process for ensuring the safe maintenance of equipment and monitoring infection prevention and control systems.

Following the assessment, we raised our concerns with the manager who was the CQC registered manager and the main sonographer for the service. They acted quickly to make the required improvements.

We found 2 breaches in regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance and asked the provider to for an action plan.
