Our view of the service
This was the first assessment of Rainbow Baby Scans since they registered with the CQC in July 2024.
In our assessment of Rainbow Baby Scans, staff were competent and trained, they understood how to protect people from abuse, they involved people in decisions about their care, and service delivery aligned to evidence-based practice. Staff were caring and understood the needs of the women and provided additional support for those who suffered a pregnancy loss. The service was responsive to the needs of the local community.
However, the service needed to strengthen its governance to ensure it made improvements to risk assessments and record keeping. The service needed to implement a process for ensuring the safe maintenance of equipment and monitoring infection prevention and control systems.
Following the assessment, we raised our concerns with the manager who was the CQC registered manager and the main sonographer for the service. They acted quickly to make the required improvements.
We found 2 breaches in regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance and asked the provider to for an action plan.
People's experience of this service
Women who used the service provided positive feedback. During the assessment process we reviewed feedback from social media and found that the service had received 5-star reviews.
Feedback included: “You helped me so much last year when I was pregnant with my first following an IVF cycle and eased my anxiety so much” and “the owner who works here is lovely they gave us all the reassurance we needed after finding out we have twins on the way. We’ve used other private scan clinics in previous pregnancies which seemed to just want to get you in and out but here is totally different, they gave us loads of printouts and you also get a USB stick”.
During the inspection we observed care provided to one couple because they were the only couple booked on the day of our visit. The couple told us they had used the service before and because they were later in their pregnancy they wanted to have a 4D scan to have a more detailed look at their baby. The sonographer was patient, took time to explain and when the baby’s face was out of range. They offered advice about mobilisation and repositioning so that the baby moved into a better position. The couple told us they had previously used a different service “that felt rushed” and they felt Rainbow Baby Scans’ staff were very caring and reduced pregnancy related anxiety.
