This is the first assessment for this service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff consistently treated people with dignity and respect, providing kind and caring support. A staff member said of people who they supported; “We know everyone. They are all so nice, they greet us so nicely. It doesn’t feel like work.”

People were very positive about the staff and the service they received. People told us that staff were kind and compassionate. They said their privacy and dignity was protected. People said, “They are very caring, they carry out my care in the privacy of my bedroom. I don’t feel rushed, my [relative] likes to have a chat with them as well”, “I am very happy with the staff” and “They treat [person] so well… They contact me if they have any concerns; they cannot do enough.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People told us staff knew them well and respected their preferences and wishes. One person said, “They sit and talk with him, listen to music, they don’t rush [person]. [Person] is in charge of the day and routines” and “The carers get on with me and the rest of our family. They understand my [relatives] needs.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.Staff encouraged independence and respected people’s choices in daily routines and activities. A staff member said, “We listen to people. It’s their choice. We provide what they want.”

One person told us, “They encourage me to do as much as I can do, they help me to make a sandwich.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

People told us they did not feel rushed; staff had time to chat and get to know them. They told us additional support with medical appointments was made available if required.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Systems were in place to promote staff well-being. Staff told us they enjoyed working for Ellie Sunrise and felt supported and valued. Staff said, “It’s so supportive, managers are really nice”, “We can ask [registered manager] anything. She always listens, even for personal things” and “[Managers] are so flexible. I think they help everyone with their problems.”
