Learning culture
The provider had systems for learning when things went wrong. Staff reported and recorded all accidents and incidents. The registered manager investigated these and made sure appropriate action was taken to keep people safe. The registered manager and staff discussed lessons learnt to help improve practice. Relatives told us staff reported any concerns and discussed these with them so they could work together to keep people safe.
Safe systems, pathways and transitions
The provider had systems for safe transitions and pathways. The registered manager assessed people’s needs to make sure they could provide safe care. They worked with people, their relatives and other professionals when needed to discuss transitions between services.
Safeguarding
The provider had procedures designed to safeguard people from abuse. Staff had undertaken training in these. Staff, people using the service and their relatives had information about how to recognise and report abuse. Relatives told us they felt the service was safe. Staff were able to describe safeguarding processes. There had not been any safeguarding concerns at the service. The registered manager was able to describe how they would respond to allegations of abuse and told us they had experience of dealing with these in another company before they worked at Geneva Quality Care.
Involving people to manage risks
The provider assessed risks to people’s safety and wellbeing. Risk assessments included information about how people wanted to be cared for and how to support them to be independent. Assessments were regularly reviewed and updated. There was clear guidance for staff. Relatives told us risks were well managed.
Safe environments
The provider ensured people’s home environments were safe. They carried out assessments which included checking equipment was safe. There were systems to ensure safe access when staff visited people.
Safe and effective staffing
There were enough suitable staff to meet people’s needs and keep them safe. Relatives told us people were cared for by the same regular care workers. Their comments included, “The carers are nice friendly people. We have the same regular carers, and [person] really likes them”, “Carers are reliable and turn up on time” and “We have the same carers who [person] knows. If there is any change, they always let us know and introduce the new carer.”
The provider had recruitment processes to ensure staff were suitable. These included checks on their skills, identity, experience and attitude to work. New staff completed an induction and a range of training. The registered manager regularly assessed their skills and competencies. Staff took part in supervisions and appraisals to discuss their work.
Infection prevention and control
There were procedures for preventing and controlling infection. Staff completed relevant training. Staff were provided with personal protective equipment (PPE). Relatives told us staff followed good hand hygiene and kept people’s homes clean. Care plans included guidance on following systems to prevent and control infection. The registered manager carried out spot checks to ensure staff followed guidance and procedures.
Medicines optimisation
Staff supported people to take their medicines safely and as prescribed. Staff undertook training to understand about safe medicines management. The registered manager assessed people’s medicines needs. There were clear medicines assessment and plans. Staff kept records to show when and how medicines were administered. The registered manager checked these. Relatives told us they were happy with the support people received with their medicines.
