Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
People were supported and encouraged to be as independent as they were able to be. Support plans were person-centred and focused on people having as much control and choice in their lives as possible. Staff demonstrated a commitment to supporting people to do as much for themselves as possible. A member of staff told us how ‘great’ it was when people achieved a goal or developed a new skill. A relative spoke about how the service had a positive impact for their loved one. They said, “Ever since [loved one has been supported] they have become more grown up and independent.”
Some people spoke to us about developing their daily skills such as keeping their home clean and tidy, cooking meals and doing their shopping. Other people spoke about the wide range of social activities they were supported to engage in. We saw activities were what people had chosen to do and had interest in. A relative said, “Staff support [loved one] to go into the community for example [loved one] loves going to car boot sales, Costa for tea and charity shops. [Loved one] definitely understands what they want staff to support them with; they do as much as they safely can.”
