Our view of the service
We inspected medical care (including older people’s care) at Oaklands Hospital on 9 and 10 April 2026. At the location this comprised endoscopy procedures, which represented a smaller proportion of the hospital activity compared to its other surgical services. The endoscopy service provided upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy under both local anaesthetic and sedation.
The endoscopy department was a day case unit which consisted of a surgical admissions unit with 3 individual bays and a separate day case ward with capacity to accommodate 8 patients in individual pod bays. The hospital accepted both private fee-paying and NHS patients. During our assessment, we spoke with 3 patients and 12 members of staff across all grades and disciplines and reviewed 6 patient records.
We rated medical care as good. Leaders in the service created a safe and supportive environment and made sure there were enough skilled staff to care for patients properly. Staff knew how to keep people safe from harm and reported concerns when needed, and areas were clean and with good infection control processes.
Patients were assessed carefully and received care based on up-to-date medical guidance. They understood their rights and felt that care was focused on them as individuals, with choices about their treatment and quick responses when their needs changed. Patients were involved in decisions about their care and could access services in ways that suited them.
Staff worked well together across the hospital to provide joined-up care, so patients were seen at the right time. Patients told us they felt listened to, were given clear information, and had chances to ask questions or raise concerns. The service also supported staff to learn and improve, helping them provide better care.
People's experience of this service
Patients we spoke with provided positive feedback throughout the assessment and told us that staff treated them with warmth and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, and provided effective care and treatment.
Patient feedback provided by the trust demonstrated that patients felt safe whilst receiving treatment at the service, staffing levels were appropriate, and staff responded quickly when this was requested. Staff communicated effectively during all stages of the endoscopy process from referral to treatment.
