Our view of the service
We inspected diagnostic imaging services at Oaklands Hospital on 9 and 10 April 2026. At the location this comprised 1 fixed and 1 mobile conventional (plain film) X-ray machine, a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanner, 2 fluoroscopy X-ray (mobile c-arm) machines, and 2 ultrasound machines. The service also contracted the use of a mobile MRI scanner, a mobile CT scanner and an ultrasound machine used in the outpatient department for echocardiography, which each attended the location at various times throughout the week.
We rated diagnostic imaging as good. Staff worked effectively as a team that maintained effective relationships across the hospital location to see patients in a timely and coordinated way. Patients told us that care was provided that was responsive to their needs and ensured they were fully informed and had the opportunities to ask questions. The service made efforts to support and develop its staff and innovate in their practice.
However, the service had not fully considered potential security risks in all its clinical spaces and staff compliance with safeguarding training was below typical provider targets.
People's experience of this service
During the assessment we spoke with a variety of patients who attended both as fee-paying and as part of NHS commissioned activity at the location, who all provided positive feedback about the service. Patients told us that appointments were arranged very quickly, and it was easy to contact the service to rearrange these to more convenient dates. Patients also told us they had been treated with dignity, respect and professionalism by staff throughout their care journey, and we observed various interactions between staff and patients that were consistent with these experiences.
