Our view of the service

Bromley Road Hospital is an independent mental health hospital operated by Elysium Healthcare Limited in Catford, south London. It provides long-term high dependency rehabilitation for adults with severe and enduring mental ill health, many of whom are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.

The service supports people to progress towards discharge to community or supported living settings through rehabilitation, therapeutic interventions and recovery-focused care. Patients may be admitted to either a treatment engaging or treatment resistant pathway, depending on their individual needs and rehabilitation goals.

At the time of assessment, the service operated across two wards:

• Cedar Ward – 6 beds
• Olive Ward – 19 beds

There are two treatment pathways available at Bromley Road: treatment engaging and treatment resistant. Each pathway is based on a three-stage model of assessment, recovery and transition. The treatment resistant cohort has a greater focus on collaborative management of the patient’s mental and physical health, building relationships with staff, friends and family and engaging in the local community.

The treatment engaging cohort has a greater focus on targeted interventions, increased levels of responsibility and further developing skills for independent living. The service utilises Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to build resilience, restore confidence, and prepare patients for a successful return to independent living.

Patients had a range of diagnoses including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar affective disorder and depression. Some patients also had complex physical health needs or a history of substance misuse.

The service is registered to carry out the following regulated activities:

• Assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
• Diagnostic and screening procedures
• Treatment of disease, disorder or injury

The service was last inspected in November 2024 and was rated Good overall and Good across all key questions.

There had been no registered manager in post since November 2025. During this assessment, leaders told us a new registered manager had recently been appointed and was due to start once the recruitment process was completed.
