Caring
Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity, and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment we looked at 1 quality statement and the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment, and wellbeing. Staff supported people to be independent and have control over their life. One person told us, "I couldn't cope in the community I tried but I couldn’t. I am coming towards the end of my time here and I feel ready now for the community. Here at Oakwood, they have helped me learn new skills and skills to cope with other people. I do yoga and meditation the meditation really helps me so much, I feel stronger now thanks to the staff here.” Another person said, “The Chef teaches us to cook if we want to learn and he spends ages with us, it matters to him that we are able to cook healthy meals when we leave here.”
Staff told us, "There is amazing food and fluid offered and the teaching and understanding around food is fabulous. The support from the chef for people's independent living skills is outstanding, with skills and knowledge around nutrition really good too" and "The chef does more than enough, in fact he goes above and beyond, the food is amazing. We teach people about budgets and food shopping. We go out and get the ingredients after asking the chef what they need to buy. (Name of staff) is a valuable team member and does so much work with people around food and daily living skills". We observed staff interactions with people in relation to support around mealtimes. Staff listened and empowered people to have control over their lives.
