Effective – this means we looked for evidence that people’s care, treatment and support achieved good outcomes and promoted a good quality of life, based on best available evidence.

At our last assessment we rated this key question Good. At this assessment the rating has remained Good.

This meant people’s outcomes were consistently good, and people’s feedback confirmed this.

The provider made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs. Staff used care plans to guide practice and work consistently. One staff member explained, “It is written in the care plans, and I also ask other (more experienced) staff if I am unsure,” showing colleagues supported one another.

Relatives confirmed involvement in assessments and reviews with one relative telling us, “I attend the annual review.” Assessments had been reviewed and updated to reflect people’s changing needs.

The provider worked with professionals to support effective outcomes. Multi-disciplinary meetings were used to review care and identify improvements. This ensured care was coordinated, responsive and based on a clear understanding of each person’s needs.

The provider respected people’s rights and supported them to make decisions about their care wherever possible. Staff sought consent before providing support and encouraged people to make everyday choices which promoted independence and autonomy.

Staff understood the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and applied it in practice. One staff member said, “I assume an individual has capacity (daily tasks/decisions), and I always ask them what they want,” demonstrating how this principle was embedded in day-to-day care. Where people lacked capacity, appropriate assessments and best interest decisions were completed.

Relatives described how staff supported people to express their preferences. One said, “Staff are very patient and encourage them,” highlighting how staff enabled people to be involved in decisions about their care. This ensured care was person-centred and reflective of individual wishes.
