Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 16 to 20 June 2025. Kismet House is a care home registered to provide accommodation and personal care to adults with mental health support needs. The service provides care and support to up to 9 people. At the time of the assessment there were 9 people using the service. At our last inspection, published July 2023, the service was rated requires improvement. The provider was in breach of the legal regulation in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance. We carried out this assessment to review actions taken by the provider following our last inspection. Some improvements were identified at this assessment, and the provider was no longer in breach of the legal regulation relating to safe care and treatment. However, in relation to good governance, we did not identify sufficient improvement, and the provider remained in breach of this regulation. We assessed 21 quality statements in the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led key questions. The rating for the safe key question has changed to good. The ratings for the quality statements we did not assess remain unchanged. The overall rating for the service has changed to good.

Improvements had been made since the last inspection in relation to the environmental risks and infection prevention and control. However, further work was required to ensure governance systems were consistently effective in improving the quality of the service, in areas such as incident recording, medicines management and staffing. There was a positive culture within the service, staff told us they felt supported, people and their relatives spoke positively of their experiences. Staff knew the people they supported well. People’s individual needs were assessed, and they were encouraged to take positive risks. Professionals told us they had good communication and positive working relationships with the service. The provider was responsive to shortfalls identified and committed to making improvements. We asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with 4 people who used the service and 3 relatives about their experience of the care and support provided. We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI), a structured observation tool to help us understand people’s experience and assess whether they received good care. The service had a calm and supportive atmosphere. We observed positive interactions between staff and people using the service, people were treated with dignity and respect. People and their relatives spoke positively of their experience. A person said, “Staff are lovely”. A relative said, “I think that it's very good indeed.” While most people and relatives expressed general satisfaction with their care they received, our assessment found some elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
