Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. The provider fostered a positive culture where people felt they could speak up and their voice would be heard.
This was people’s home, and we observed they were comfortable in their surroundings and interacting with the provider, staff and their family members
Everyone at the service was treated as an individual and able to follow their own routines and interests in accordance with their preferences and abilities. This included how they spent their time. One person enjoyed volunteering at the local charity shop, another person attended a day service providing a realistic and inclusive workexperience for people. Several people chose to spend their time working outside on the small holdings in the extensive grounds at the service.
Throughout our inspection visits we saw staff included people in daily living tasks around the home to make sure they were fully involved in everything which was going on.
People were able to spend time with others that were important to them, and staff supported people to make and maintain relationships. This included supporting people to become involved in community events such as joining the local amateur dramatics production that one person proudly told us about and attending the local church as well as support to go on holidays. A member of staff said, “The local village hall hosts bingo nights, music nights, [people] access supermarkets, local walks, local parks, local private swimming pool.”
Staff supported people with decision making and encouraged their independence, making sure they were able to do things for themselves such as undertaking household chores, food shopping and preparing their own meals.
