Our view of the service
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and most specialist paediatric centres in the UK, providing care for a wide range of complex and rare conditions. The Great Ormond Street Hospital delivers highly specialised services across more than 50 clinical areas, supporting both physical and mental health needs. These services include medical and surgical specialties, critical care, specialist diagnostics, outpatient care, and child and adolescent mental health provision. As a national referral centre, the hospital receives patients from across the UK and internationally, often delivering care through multidisciplinary teams. The trust also operates an international and private patients’ service, further extending its role in specialist paediatric healthcare.
This assessment focused on the quality of surgical services. Evidence considered included findings from the inspection team, documentation submitted by the trust, clinical audits, patient safety data, meeting records, and feedback from patients, families, and staff. The evaluation was structured around the five key questions: whether the service was safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. This review builds on findings from previous inspections, including the most recent surgical core service inspection conducted in November 2019.
