Our view of the service

We conducted an on-site, assessment visit of urgent and emergency care services on 7 to 8 October 2025 due to an aged rating.

We assessed all quality statements from the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions.

The assessment team included 2 CQC inspectors, 1 pharmacy specialist CQC inspector and 3 CQC specialist advisors.

We looked at the adult emergency department and spoke to all grades of medical, nursing and support staff, we also spoke ambulance crews and other professionals from different specialties within the department. We spoke with patients and their relatives in all areas of the department.

However, we found breaches of legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, staffing, infection prevention and control, governance, access to services and consent.

In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward.

Or, if we have requested an action plan, this will be requested upon publication of the final report.

People's experience of this service

Patients reported being treated with kindness, empathy, and compassion - even during busy periods. We observed warm and respectful interactions between staff and patients, with staff explaining procedures and care as they were delivered. Patients also confirmed that they were offered a range of food options that catered to religious, cultural, and dietary needs. Patients felt supported in making informed decisions about their care and treatment. However, many others told us about long waits, poor communication, and a lack of support for complex needs.
