Our view of the service

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provide a comprehensive range of acute hospital and specialist healthcare for approximately 800,000 people living in York, North Yorkshire, Northeast Yorkshire, and Ryedale. The trust manages 2 acute hospital sites and 6 community hospitals. There is a workforce of over 10,000 staff working across the hospitals and in the community.

Scarborough Hospital is the trust’s second largest hospital. It has 277 beds and offers a range of inpatient and outpatient services. It provides acute medical and surgical services, including trauma and intensive care.

We carried out an assessment of urgent and emergency care (UEC) and medical care services at Scarborough Hospital. The assessment commenced on 7 October 2025, with an unannounced visit to urgent emergency care (UEC) and the medical service by a team of inspectors and specialist advisors on 7, 8 and 9 October 2025. The assessment focused on thirty-three quality statements under the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well Led Key Questions. Following the assessment, the UEC service has an overall rating of requires improvement, and medical care services has an overall rating of good. The rating from UEC and medical care has been combined with ratings of the other services from the last inspections. We found continued breaches of legal regulations in relation to staffing, consent, good governance and access to services. We found new breaches of regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance.
