Assessing needs

Score: 3

People, and where appropriate their relatives, were involved in the assessment of their needs. Support maximised their involvement and ensured needs were fully explored from the outset. People felt involved in the process.

People’s needs were assessed using a range of assessment tools to ensure their needs were reflected and understood. Where improvements could be made to how these tools informed the care that was given, the registered manager was responsive to our feedback.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Score: 3

We did not look at Delivering evidence-based care and treatment during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Effective.

How staff, teams and services work together

Score: 3

Teams and individual staff worked together well to support people. Record keeping was generally comprehensive, although at times needed to be more accessible. There were plans in place to move from paper-based to electronic records and the registered manager recognised the need to use this as an opportunity to tidy up some minor aspects of record keeping. Staff had access to the information they needed to assess, plan and deliver people’s care, treatment and support.

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Score: 3

We did not look at Supporting people to live healthier lives during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Effective.

Monitoring and improving outcomes

Score: 3

People’s care and treatment was regularly monitored to continuously improve it. Outcomes were positive, consistent and delivered through an understanding and application of good practice. External clinicians had confidence in the standards of care people received, and the outcomes they experienced.

The registered manager demonstrated a clear understanding of the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). The MCA provides a legal framework for making particular decisions on behalf of people who may lack the mental capacity to do so for themselves. Staff had received training regarding the MCA and policies were in line with the principles of the MCA.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives. Staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests. Staff sought consent and people and families were involved in decisions about their care. Capacity assessments were decision-specific and respectful of people’s right to make their own choices, even ones that may be considered unwise.
