Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and

treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

This is the first full assessment for this registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. We observed kind and positive interactions between staff and people, including relatives.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.We observed people doing things they wanted to do. This included sitting watching TV and having an evening meal they had chosen. Another person had just returned from therapeutic working, which they told us they enjoyed.

Independence, choice and control

The provider truly promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. There were several examples of how people’s independence had been enhanced and supported by staff. One staff member commented, “Some staff are not always following the PBS (Positive Behavioural Support) plan as sometimes its easier not to.” We reported this to the management team who were going to undertake a full review with the staff team to ensure the PBS was always followed.People were supported to experience a range of activities, including involvement in the local community.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.We observed staff react immediately to some heightened behaviours and ensured we were fully aware of what this meant and what we should do during our visits as to not escalate the situation.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.The management team held regular individual meetings with staff to help them discuss their roles and needs. Staff told us they received support from the management team.
