Safeguarding

The service worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. They concentrated on improving people’s lives while protecting their right to live in safety, free from bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, avoidable harm and neglect. The service shared concerns quickly and appropriately. People were protected from avoidable harm and told us they felt safe with the care and support provided by Caremark Bournemouth. One person said, “I am happy with them and very pleased.” Relatives shared similar views, expressing trust and confidence in the service. A relative told us, “They provide a safe service, and they do their best. We are pleased.” Staff had completed safeguarding training, with regular updates in place. They were confident in raising concerns with the registered manager or externally if needed. Staff also spoke positively about the on-call system and the ongoing support they received. One staff member told us, “The registered manager always strives to ensure a safe, meaningful and secure environment for both clients and staff. A pleasure to work for.”

Involving people to manage risks

The service worked with people to understand and manage risks by thinking holistically. They provided care to meet people’s needs that was safe, supportive and enabled people to do the things that mattered to them. People’s risks had been identified and assessed, and clear instructions were provided for staff, including step-by-step processes to promote safety. Staff were fully aware of individual risks and were able to describe how they followed procedures and care plans to minimise these risks. Staff had access to the information they needed to deliver safe care and had received relevant training. Office staff carried out regular spot checks to ensure that people’s risks were being managed effectively. Environmental risks within people’s homes were also assessed, including equipment safety, fire safety, and emergencies such as gas or water leaks.

Safe and effective staffing

The service made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual need. There were enough suitably skilled and trained staff to meet people’s needs. People and their relatives told us they were happy and grateful for the care staff provided. A relative said, “The carers go above and beyond. They are very helpful.’’ Staff had a positive view of their colleagues and the wider team. They described strong teamwork and regular contact with management. Staff told us, “I feel like part of the team because I am in regular contact with management,” and “My colleagues and I share ideas and support each other.” The service had a robust recruitment process, and staff were recruited safely. Procedures were in place to ensure the required checks were carried out on staff before they commenced their employment. This included enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for adults. DBS checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the police national computer. The information helps employers make safer recruitment decisions. Staff completed a structured induction that included shadowing, competency checks, and regular support. Training was delivered through a blended approach, combining online modules with face-to-face learning. On-going support was in place, including a schedule of supervisions and spot checks. Records showed these were meaningful, two-way discussions that helped promote reflective practice and continuous development.
