Caring – this means we looked for evidence the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Staff were kind and caring. People were treated with dignity and respect. Relatives told us, “When we visit, we see members of staff engaging so well with every person.” and “We can visit whenever we want, and members of staff always make us welcome with a cup of tea and a nice chat.” Another relative said, “Members of staff always respect my [family member’s] dignity and privacy.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People lived in their own homes and each person was treated as an individual. When we spent time with people in their homes, their unique personalities shone through. People's care plans supported their individuality. Relatives told us, “[Family member] is so safe because staff understand them so well.” and “Oh yes, [members of staff] are caring. They always go the extra mile not only for my [family member] but for all the people.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to have choice and control and their independence was promoted. A relative told us, “[Family member] used to come home for 2 nights but it is down to 1 now because they want to go back [to their home].” Another relative said, “I always say if [family member] is happy then I am happy, and they are happy. [Members of staff] are very good.” A member of staff told us, “People are supported to make choices every day, from what they eat to how they spend their time.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. Members of staff listened to people and responded to their needs appropriately. A member of staff told us, “I facilitate access to activities and community engagement by prioritising people’s preferences and interests. I invest time in understanding their passions and values. For instance, I may support an individual in attending a local coffee morning, going shopping, or participating in an exercise class.” We observed members of staff supporting people in their homes and responding to their need for care and support in a considerate and timely way.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The provider had an employee assistance programme in place and members of staff has access to supervision sessions and support from a member of the management team. A member of staff told us, “I have regular supervisions and appraisals. I feel very supported by my manager.”
