We assessed Dialysis Services at Clacton-on-Sea Dialysis Unit on 1 July 2026. Clacton-on-Sea Dialysis Unit is operated by Diaverum UK Limited. The service is commissioned by the local NHS trust. The service has 12 dialysis stations which are mixed sex, providing haemodialysis to adults aged 18 and over.
We carried out a comprehensive assessment and inspected all 34 quality statements across safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led key questions. This was an aged rating assessment and to follow up on a previous requirement notice.
During our assessment we spoke with 6 staff and 5 patients. Patients told us they were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff were attentive to patient’s needs, including arranging food for when patients were awaiting transport home. Patients had an assigned nurse on the day of each dialysis session, with whom they could discuss any concerns, ask questions, and seek further information about their care.
Staff reported they were given time to complete mandatory training to maintain high-quality care. Staff understood how to raise concerns and report incidents. Staff completed risk assessments on admission. However, did not always review these in line with policy. Staff involved patients in decisions regarding their care and treatment as well as risks of missed and shorted treatment. Staff had strong working relationships with their community partners and NHS service to optimise the delivery of care. We observed staff being respectful and caring towards one another as well as patients. The service did not always keep records of all relevant meetings and service level agreements in line with good governance. We saw evidence of listening to both staff and patient feedback to improve the service.
We rated the service as good. We found breaches of the regulations in relation to good governance.
