Equity in access
The 2025 National Patient Survey indicated some dissatisfaction with access to the practice. Only 45% of respondents found it easy to contact the practice by telephone, which was below both the local average (51%) and national average (53%). Overall, 60% reported a good experience when contacting the practice, compared with 64% locally and 70% nationally. Additionally, 55% said the practice website was very or fairly easy to use. In response to results, the practice had migrated to a cloud-based telephone system, enabled call back, promoted online methods of contact, introduced a dashboard in reception so staff can monitor calls, and commenced recruitment of reception staff. We noted that 83% of patients rated reception staff as very or fairly helpful, which was in line with the national average and above the local average.
The practice followed an appointment triage model. People could contact the service by telephone, in person, or via the multilingual website. All patients completed a digital form which was then reviewed by a GP and appointments were allocated dependent on urgency. Where people were unable to complete the form, staff would provide assistance. The staff explained that all patients now received an outcome from their initial contact with the practice. The leaders monitored the effectiveness of the total triage system in reducing AE use, this had reduced by 8%.
The practice had treatment rooms on the ground floor with appropriate mobility access.
People had access to an enhanced access service from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm weekdays and all day at weekends.
The provider had systems in place to regularly review appointment availability across face-to-face, telephone, and online routes, ensuring timely access for all patient groups.
Older patients with multiple long-term conditions were offered proactive, regular reviews. Over the past year, housebound patients received an average of four home visits, while those able to attend the practice were typically seen twice. Staff also referred patients to the Homerton hospital frailty virtual ward, a specialist, multi-disciplinary team providing care at home and avoiding hospital admissions and facilitating early discharge.
The practice provided a service to a local residential home who stated the practice has always been helpful, effective, quick to respond, communicated well and made sure residents received the care they need without delay.
Equity in experiences and outcomes
Staff understood the importance of providing an inclusive approach to care and made adjustments to support equity in people’s experience and outcomes.
The 2025 National GP Patient Survey showed that 91% of patients felt their needs were met, compared with a local average (81%) and a national average (86%). Leaders proactively sought ways to address any barriers to improving people’s experience and worked with local services, including the voluntary sector, to address any local health inequalities. For example:- The practice had hosted a healthy heart event on 28th November 2025 on behalf of Clissold Park PCN. At this event patients could check their BMI and blood pressure. Advice regarding diet and exercise was also provided
- Suitable patients had been invited via text to virtual education sessions organised by the community women’s health team, who provided menopause education.
- The provider had systems in place to support registration for vulnerable groups, including homeless people and travellers. The practice was main GP surgery for a local hostel for people who did not have long term accommodation and was designated as a safe surgery for people with people with not yet established immigration status.
- Weekly face to face appointments were available with a Turkish speaking Welfare Advisor.
- For people with a mental health condition, the practice offered various services. Such as inhouse counselling, a neighbourhood occupational therapist, a wellbeing practitioner and well family plus (For people over the age of 16, who experienced mild to moderate mental health difficulties. This service offers holistic assessments, advice, and information, emotional and practical support. They provided 4 telephone appointment slots per week to Barton House patients.)
The practice had alerts on their computer system to ensure staff identified patients with known communication needs, interpretation services.
Staff had completed training to enable them to understand the needs of people who were most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes.Planning for the future
