Shared direction and culture

Score: 3

The practice had a shared vision, strategy and culture. This was based on transparency, equity, equality, human rights, diversity, inclusion and engagement. Staff and leaders understood the challenges and the needs of people and their communities.

The practice had a clear vision and strategy that was embedded throughout the service. A patient-centred approach was reinforced continuously in staff meetings, in staff inductions and training. Staff we spoke with told us that there was an ethos of patient-led care. Leaders monitored and reviewed progress against the delivery of their strategy. Leaders were visible and approachable. Staff we spoke with described an open and supportive culture where they felt comfortable with raising concerns and asking questions. They told us they felt supported and were encouraged to develop within their roles and in their career aspirations. Staff described how leaders provided practical and emotional support. The practice had a number of staff wellbeing initiatives, including meditation/yoga sessions for staff, team building events and building wellbeing breaks into clinics. Staff and leaders actively promoted equality and diversity and worked to identify the causes of any workforce inequalities. They demonstrated a positive and compassionate listening culture that focused on learning and development.

The practice was aware of local challenges which affected their service, such as increasing diversity within the patient population, and worked with partner agencies to address these challenges. For example, the practice had recognised that a significant proportion of its patient population was Kuwaiti and had employed a dedicated member of staff to communicate with this cohort in Kuwaiti Arabic, which had improved communication, patient confidence, engagement and accessibility of care for this patient group.

They acted on the best information about risk, performance and outcomes, and shared this securely with others when appropriate.

All staff we spoke with were clear on their individual roles and responsibilities. Leaders proactively supported staff and regularly met with them to completed appraisals and performance reviews.
