Well-led
We looked for evidence that the practice’s leadership, management and governance assured high-quality, person-centred care and promoted an open and fair culture. At our last assessment, we rated this key question as good. At this assessment, the rating remains the same.
This service scored 79 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
The practice had a shared vision, strategy and culture. This was based on honesty, transparency, innovation, continuous learning and development, and collaborative working.
Leaders had recently worked collaboratively to create a vision and culture around the needs of the practice, its staff and patients. Leaders were keen to involve staff in decision-making about the future. We saw a presentation leaders intended to share with staff to gain their feedback and ideas. This session was planned for the next full staff meeting. It had been delayed only due to factors outside the practice’s control.
Staff and leaders were aware of local challenges which affected the practice. This included the projected increase in the local population over the coming years. The practice worked with partner agencies to discuss solutions on how best to address these challenges.
Leaders demonstrated a positive and compassionate listening culture. The practice actively encouraged staff learning and development. Staff we spoke to told us they felt supported in their role and able to speak up if they had concerns or ideas for improvement.
Leaders always acted on the best information about risk, performance and outcomes, and they shared this securely with other organisations when appropriate.

Governance, management and sustainability
The practice had clear responsibilities, roles, systems of accountability and good governance. All staff we spoke to were clear on their individual roles and responsibilities. Leaders had confidence in staff with lead roles to deliver their responsibilities effectively.
The provider had established, comprehensive governance processes in place.
Staff could easily access all required policies and procedures. These were kept up to date and reflected latest guidance.
Staff took confidentiality and information security seriously. The practice submitted data and notifications to external agencies, as required.
Leaders proactively supported staff and regularly met with them to complete appraisals and performance reviews. Staff were encouraged and supported to develop professionally according to their skills and interests.
Leaders held regular meetings with staff. They discussed emerging issues and potential improvements to the practice. Leaders kept staff informed of key changes and developments.
Leaders had thoroughly considered potential long-term risks to the practice. They had completed detailed analysis of management roles and responsibilities. This was used for succession planning, including the training and development of managers. This ensured staff were not overburdened with additional responsibilities despite any management changes, and that the practice remained effective in delivering safe patient care.
Leaders had identified the risk due to the age and condition of the Danes Dyke Surgery site. They had been actively engaged in talks with relevant local agencies for some time to try and secure new premises.
Leaders were proactive in completing strategic forward-planning, not only relating to Scarborough Medical Group services and patients, but with consideration of the benefits to the wider local community and the needs its people. We reviewed several examples of this and felt assured that the practice was actively engaged in developing services, planning for the future and investing in the recruitment and retention of staff.
The practice is regarded locally as highly engaged and one that works collaboratively with local partners.
The provider responded positively and quickly to rectify the minor issues we raised during this assessment.
