Safe and effective staffing
The service made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.
At the assessment in March 2025, we identified gaps in recruitment checks and mandatory training for locum staff, along with insufficient evidence of induction processes for new staff. In addition, there was no structured supervision process or formal oversight in place to demonstrate and monitor the prescribing competence of non-medical prescribers.
At this assessment, we noted that the provider had strengthened recruitment processes to ensure all required pre-employment checks were completed before locum staff commenced duties. This included verification of identity, employment history, professional registration, and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks where applicable. In addition, systems had been introduced to ensure that all locum staff provided up-to-date evidence of mandatory training.
There were a range of clinical and non-clinical roles within the practice. We found that training was up to date, and staff learning needs and development were managed appropriately. Safe recruitment practices were followed, and induction records were available for 2 new staff members who had commenced employment since the previous assessment.
Supervision of clinical pharmacists was delivered through a combination of formal and informal arrangements by both the primary care network and the service. Staff received annual observed consultations to review clinical practice and prescribing competence across a range of conditions. In addition, regular supervision opportunities were available through scheduled daily debrief sessions with GPs, alongside access to ad hoc clinical support. Staff were also able to seek guidance from relevant clinical leads for specialist areas, ensuring appropriate oversight and support in their role.
