Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 16 June to 11 July 2025. Newbarn Limited is a homecare agency providing support for people living in 3 types of accommodation; 24 hour supported living, semi-supported living and people’s own homes. People had varying support needs including mental health and substance abuse.
Not everyone who used the service received personal care. CQC only inspects where people receive personal care. At the time of the assessment, 3 people were in receipt of personal care. This is help with tasks related to personal hygiene and eating.
We found people's care needs were risk assessed and care plans provided staff with the information they needed to manage identified risk. People’s care plans needed to be more person centered and detailed which had already been identified by the registered manager, and reviews of care plans had started. People and their families were consulted about the care provided and were supported to achieve outcomes to improve their health and wellbeing. Some carers and relatives wanted to be more involved in their relative’s care and a new parent and carer meeting had been implemented to facilitate this. The service worked well with other health and social care professionals and supported people to achieve good outcomes.
People were protected from the risks of abuse and staff were trusted to keep them safe. Staff had received training in how to safeguard people and management conducted regular knowledge checks.
There were enough staff to support people and recruitment checks were robust to ensure staff were suitable to work with vulnerable adults. Staff had the necessary safety checks in place before starting work and completed a full induction and regular supervisions.
Governance systems were in place to monitor the standard of care people received. People and their relatives’ views had been sought and regular audits were used to drive improvement. Staff views were sought through meetings and supervisions.
Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on open communication, listening and enabling independence. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally. The management team were passionate about providing high quality care and this was supported by the systems in place.
Overall, medicines were managed safely. We found one inconsistency relating to information regarding pain relief medication; however, no harm had been caused due to the knowledge and consistency of the staff. Medication audits were robust and the service had systems in place to identify and rectify errors, minimising future risk for the people using the service.
