During an inspection looking at part of the service

About the service:

The Glen is a residential nursing home situated within the Dore area of Sheffield. The home is a converted house with a purpose built extension. The home provides accommodation, personal care and nursing care for older people and people living with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 15 people using the service.

We found the following examples of good practice.

• The provider went into early lockdown and the service had made changes to prevent visitors from catching and spreading infection. This included extra training for staff and enhanced cleaning throughout the service.

• The service had been innovative in their use of technology which enabled people to keep in regular touch with their friends and families throughout the pandemic.

• The service had allocated four outdoor areas where people could meet their families and friends whilst maintaining social distancing. All the visits were individually assessed and organised by an appointment system. This allowed the service to manage the visits and allowed sufficient time for staff to disinfect areas before and after each visit. In exceptional cases family were supported to safely enter the home through a side door and personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand sanitizer was provided.

• People were supported in creative ways, including having their own dedicated staff who provided a ‘support bubble’ to support all their needs, including their meals and social support.

• New admissions are tested for COVID 19 and the results are known before they are admitted to the home. All new admissions are isolated to their rooms for 14 days.
