People were protected from the risk of harm and abuse. People were supported to understand and manage risk. Care plans were clear and provided sufficient guidance to staff to keep people safe. There were sufficient and appropriately trained staff in place to support people.

Safeguarding

Staff were trained in safeguarding and had a good understanding about how to protect people from different forms of abuse. Staff knew how to report any concerns both at the service and to external authorities such as the local authority safeguarding team.

People and their relatives told us they felt safe being supported by staff. They knew how to raise any concerns they might have. One person said, ''I feel very safe here. It is very secure and the staff know me well and would notice if something is wrong. If I had any problems I could raise this with the staff team.''

The provider's safeguarding policy and processes were in line with relevant legislation. All staff had completed safeguarding training. This promoted people being safeguarded from the risk of abuse and having their rights upheld.

Involving people to manage risks

There were systems in place for staff to report concerns, incidents, and accidents on an electronic system. This promoted the provider having oversight and being able to manage risks. The management team completed regular audits and action plans were put in place if any risks were identified.

Staff knew the risks to people well and told us they were kept up to date if there had been any changes to risk assessments. Staff completed health and safety, including fire safety checks of the environment to help ensure risks were mitigated as far as possible.

Risks to people had been assessed and risk assessments had been put in place to help mitigate risks as far as possible. These risks included area such as supporting people with mobility equipment or with personal care. People and relatives told us staff knew how to support them/ their family member with known risks.

Safe and effective staffing

Staff schedules and rotas showed there were appropriate staffing levels in place to meet people's needs. The management team worked with staff from another of the providers service nearby to cover staff absence and sickness and this was an effective system. Staff had completed training relevant to their roles and there were systems in place for the provider to identify and monitor staff training requirements. The provider recruited new staff in line with legislation to help ensure they were suitable for their job roles.

Staff told us the current staffing arrangements at the service were effective. Staff told us about the training they had as part of their job roles and were knowledgeable about the topics they were trained in such as fire safety, infection control and supporting people living with dementia. Staff felt well supported by the management team and were able to discuss their job roles in supervisions and meetings.

People told us there were enough staff to support them and staff arrived for care visits on time. They also confirmed they were able to change staff visit times and durations depending on their preferences and this was accommodated. One person said, ''I have never had to wait more than a minute or two for staff. The core staff team here know me well and are more like family really.''
