Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment, and wellbeing. Staff supported people to exercise their right to independence, choice, and control at differing levels dependant on their healthcare, and dependency needs and mental capacity. People were supported to understand their rights by using different communication techniques, and languages if required and their understanding was regularly reviewed. The systems enabled people to maintain important relationships, access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health, and wellbeing. People regularly accessed local shops and other amenities with staff support. A relative said, “[Person using the service] is always out and about doing what he wants.” The person was on their way out for lunch with a staff member when we arrived.
