Mountview Care home is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care to up to 66 people. The service provides support to older people, including people who are living with dementia. At the time of our assessment there were 64 people living at the service.
People were kept safe; incidents were reported, reviewed and used as learning opportunities. Risks were managed with measures such as the completion of risk assessments and use of appropriate equipment implemented to support people’s safety. Records relating to specific risks associated with people’s health conditions and monitoring records of people’s needs required further development. Staff worked effectively with healthcare professionals to promote safe, coordinated care and ensured smooth transitions between services. Safeguarding procedures were understood, and staff demonstrated an ability to support people safely. Medicines were managed and administered safely, though we found some improvements were needed to ensure monitoring records were completed accurately.
Regular environmental checks were carried out to ensure the premises remained safe and well maintained and the environment was clean. Staff received an induction, training and support to enable them to develop and meet people’s needs. Sufficient staff were deployed to meet people’s needs but, on occasions, people did not receive a timely response when they called for assistance. People were supported to maintain their independence. People were positive about meals and drinks available in the service.
We observed people were treated with kindness and respect. Staff were observed providing supportive care that maintained people’s dignity. Relatives spoke positively about the care their family members received and were able to visit when they wished. People were encouraged to make choices and moved freely around the home with support available when required. There were systems and processes to seek the views of people and their relatives. These could be developed further to evidence how people are involved and consulted in reviews of their care.
There were effective governance arrangements. A regular auditing and quality assurance system was completed by the provider and registered manager. There was a service improvement plan to promote continual development and improvement. The provider had established a number of links with the local community to improve the quality of life for people living at the service.
